16 Oct 2019
Hon.Dr.Rayya bint Salem Al Manthari, State Council member and representative of the Arab Group at the Forum of Young Parliamentarians of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), said that the Sultanate has dedicated October 17 for the celebration of the Omani Women's Day, each year.
His Majesty has been keen since the beginning of the blessed renaissance to integrate women in the process of comprehensive development after creating systems to provide education, rehabilitation, and training and employment opportunities. His Majesty has in his earlier speech referred to the Omani women as one of the wings of the bird that flies from the homeland to the horizons of the heavens, without which it cannot fly.
She added that the celebration of Women's Day this year comes amid achievements reflecting of women and men in the 141st General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Belgrade.
Hon.Dr.Rayya pointed out that there are ongoing efforts to enhance the political participation of Omani women, and noted in this regard the training programs implemented to impart essential skills to the women candidates of the Majlis A’Shura elections for preparation for the electoral campaign relating to the Majlis A’Shura elections scheduled this month end.
Hon.Rayya drew attention to the experience of the student advisory councils in the Sultanate as a role model that raise awareness and educate young people about the electoral process, and are positive indicators of society's confidence in women by electing an estimated percentage of female students in these councils.
For her part, Hon.Eng.Naashia bint Saud Al Kharoosi, State Council member at the meeting of the Committee "Partnership between men and women", called the Inter-Parliamentary Union to review the mechanism of calculating women in parliament, as it presents an erroneous statistics for countries that adopt the dual council system. This methodology of classification has placed the Sultanate in a way that is not suiting the reality of the achievements achieved by the Sultanate in this aspect.
